Madhav plays basketball well but struggles with his English. He is admitted to St. Stephen's College in Delhi on the basis of a sports quota, where he meets upper-class young girl Riya Somani who has been granted temporary admission on the basis of a sports quota. They become close friends and take part in nightly basketball games. When Madhav shares about Riya with his roommate Shailesh and his friends, they press him to ask her out on a date, but she declines and instead begs him to stay friends. In the hopes that Riya will one day date him, Madhav's buddies still urge him to pursue her.
Madhav and Riya spend a night together. After spending the evening with her, Madhav picks her up from her home, and when she arrives back home, she gives him a kiss before going inside.
Madhav confronts Riya about their connection when he shows up to celebrate her birthday. Uncomfortable, Riya tells him that she is not his girlfriend, but since they have come to a compromise, she offers to be his "Half Girlfriend" so that they can work things out. After a game one afternoon, Madhav invites Riya to relax in his room at a hostel for boys only, where Madhav tries to seduce Riya. Several days later, upset and hurt, Riya informs Madhav that she is quitting college and getting married. Although Madhav attempts to stop her, she flees.
After graduating from college, Madhav returns to his village where his family runs a school in which only boys attend due to the lack of restrooms for ladies. Bill Gates will be visiting Patna and giving donations to schools, Madhav learns. Madhav makes the decision to seek a grant and travels to Patna's Chanakya Hotel to do so.
After the conference, Madhav meets Riya, a Closeup employee who resides in the hotel. After spending some time together, Madhav discovers that Riya divorced her husband after he and his mother started beating her. Riya assists Madhav in getting ready for an English speech he must give to Bill Gates. He brings her to his house one day, where Madhav's mother questions her about her engagement. When she learns she's divorced, she behaves harshly. Riya's mother begs her to avoid Madhav a few days prior to the speech when she must return to Patna. But she goes to Madhav's address, where he is granted a grant from the Bill Gates Foundation.
After the lecture, Madhav receives a letter from Riya from a young student at the school. According to the letter, Riya has blood cancer and will pass away in three months. She asks him not to look for her because she doesn't know where she's going. After learning of Riya's illness, Riya's mother begins crying, therefore Madhav is shown coming to Riya's residence to bring her possessions. She once told Madhav that she wanted to sing at a bar in New York. Unprepared, Madhav visits his friend Shailesh in New York.
After learning about the incident, Shailesh and his spouse Rutvi attempt to divert Madhav's attention away from Riya. He is being fixed up by Rutvi with her friend Anshika. They interact for a while. For three months straight, Madhav searches for Riya before his time is up. He views a video of Anshika, who had fallen in love with him, thanking him for being a part of her life on the final day when he was at his farewell party. Madhav sees a hazy image of Riya performing in a cafe in this video. Riya is there when he runs there. They come to an understanding and marry. Riya reveals that Madhav's mother didn't want Riya, a divorcee, to be with her son and that's why she told Madhav she was ill.
A few years later, Riya teaches their daughter how to play basketball, but she seems unable to play, and Madhav is seen discussing the opening of a new school with his mother. Riya urges her daughter to persevere.
