A guitarist is basically a guitar player. Acoustic, electric, bass, and classical guitars are just a few of the guitar family instruments that guitarists can play. Some guitarists sing, play the harmonica, or do both while they play the guitar.

Depending on the type of strings being used (nylon or steel), the guitarist may use a variety of techniques to produce the sound of the guitar, including finger picking, strumming with the fingers, or using a guitar pick made of bone, horn, plastic, metal, felt, leather, or paper, as well as melodic flat-picking and finger-picking.
