Sam Alexander, the owner of a fun-loving auto repair shop, prefers to write and direct plays for the stage instead of managing his business. Being a theatre enthusiast is currently working on Shakunthalam, the well-known drama by Kalidasa, with his buddies.

The lead actress Komalam, who was intended to play Shakunthala, elopes with fellow actor Krishnan Kutty. Sam is occupied with finding a new face to portray Shakunthala. He meets Sreedevi Menon by chance and develops feelings for her. He uses every trick in the book to court her, and eventually, she succumbs. Her family isn't happy about their relationship, though, and the couple struggles a lot, as is depicted in the film.
