Yash Chopra's Hindi-language musical romance film Dil To Pagal Hai was released in 1997. The movie centres on the love lives of the dancers in a musical group. Madhuri Dixit and Karisma Kapoor portray two of the dancers, and Shah Rukh Khan plays the choreographer. Akshay Kumar makes a lengthy cameo as Dixit's childhood buddy. Anand Bakshi wrote the lyrics, and Uttam Singh created the soundtrack. During the Celebrating Dance in Indian Cinema segment of the 2014 International Film Festival of India, the movie was screened retrospectively. It also starred actors like Farida Jalal, Suresh Menon, Balvinder Singh Suri and Deven Verma, among others in supporting roles.
Rahul and Nisha, who are both performers in a large dance company that puts on dance-based musical productions, are the centre of the story. Although Nisha secretly has feelings for Rahul, they are the best of friends. Rahul declares his intention to helm the musical Maya. Rahul defines "Maya" as a girl who believes in genuine love and is waiting for her prince charming who would undoubtedly appear and take her away, but the other members of the troupe, particularly Nisha, have their concerns about the role. Pooja, a talented dancer who has received traditional training, is also introduced at this time. She was orphaned at an early age and fostered by her parents' close friends.
Pooja and Rahul frequently bump into one another, resulting in a series of close calls. Each of these occurrences is signalled by a background melody that Pooja picks up on. Nisha has a leg injury during play rehearsals, and the doctor predicts that she won't be able to dance for a few months. To fill the play's leading lady position, Rahul needs a different woman. One day he sees Pooja dancing and decides she's the one for the part. She agrees when he urges her to attend their rehearsals. Pooja and Rahul grow close friends. Ajay, the son of Pooja's guardians who has been living in London for months, shortly takes her to Germany after being pampered by her foster family. Ajay pops the question to Pooja just before boarding a flight for London. She finds herself in a difficult situation and decides to accept it.
Indignant that she has been replaced, Nisha quickly makes her way back from the hospital. She develops intense jealousy of Pooja after finding out that Rahul adores her. She decides to travel to London because she is aware that Rahul does not share her feelings for him. Rahul and Pooja notice they are beginning to fall for one another throughout the rehearsals. One day, when Rahul is driving Pooja home, he begins whistling his song, which causes Pooja to realise that she has fallen for the man whose tune she has been hearing so frequently. The two meet Pooja's former dance instructor the following day, whom Pooja refers to as Tai, who assumes that the two are obviously in love.
Ajay shows up at the rehearsal space a few days prior to the premiere to surprise Pooja while introducing himself to everyone as her fiancé. Rahul tries hard not to reveal how devastated he is. The newly-returned Nisha senses Rahul's anguish and shares how she, too, was saddened when he failed to reciprocate her love. Instead of always providing a cheerful ending as is his custom, Rahul changes the play's ending to reflect his sadness.
When Rahul and Pooja's characters are set to split up on stage during the premiere, Ajay plays a recording that Pooja was planning to send Rahul before his proposal in which she expressed her feelings for him. Rahul and Pooja are destined to be together, Ajay is implying to Pooja. Pooja now understands that she truly loves Rahul, and as the audience cheers them on, the two publicly proclaim their love, giving the drama another happy ending. Ajay also asks Nisha whether she's married after they leave the stage in the rear (implying he's starting to develop interest in her).
