Rekha, Preity Zinta, Mahima Chaudhry, Arjun Rampal, Jimmy Sheirgill, and Alok Nath feature in Kundan Shah's 2002 Indian Hindi romance drama film Dil Hai Tumhaara. The movie was marketed as Zinta's star vehicle, and despite the film's initial box office disappointment, Zinta's performance was acclaimed by reviewers and led to nominations for Best Actress at a number of award shows. Nadeem-soundtrack Shravan's performed well on the charts. It stars Rekha, Jimmy Shergill, Arjun Rampal, Mahima Chaudhary, Preity Zinta, Alok Nath, Sachin Khedkekar, and Govind Namdeo.

A young woman named Shalu (Preity Zinta) resides with her mother Sarita (Rekha) and older sister Nimmi (Mahima Chaudhry). They are not aware that Shalu and Nimmi are half-siblings. Shekar, Sarita's late husband, had an affair with a woman, and their child is named Shalu.

Shekar urged Sarita to raise Shalu as her own after being fatally injured in a vehicle accident with Shalu's natural mother.

Sarita adopted Shalu, but she is unable to offer her the same kind of affection as she does for Nimmi. Shalu, on the other hand, is always pining for her mother's love. She demands attention and responds by acting out. Despite her refusal to think negatively of her mother or take sides, Nimmi deeply loves Shalu and defends her at all times.

Arjun Rampal's character Dev Khanna, a young man, enters the sisters' lives.Shalu and Dev don't get along at first but eventually start to like each other. Nimmi, however, is led to believe that Dev is in love with her by events. Sarita, who only knows Nimmi's version of events, proposes to Dev's father (Alok Nath) on Nimmi's behalf. Mr. Khanna is surprised because he is aware of Dev and Shalu. Sarita assumes that Dev has been taken from Nimmi by Shalu, just as Shalu's mother took Shekar from her, when she observes Dev and Shalu interacting affectionately. She confronts Nimmi and confesses her true ancestry out of rage.

Shalu, who is horrified by her parentage, resolves to give up Dev in order to please her mother and sister. Dev finally decides to marry Nimmi out of sadness in order to make Shalu happy. Nimmi sees that Shalu is acting strangely, but Shalu dodges the subject by claiming that Samir (Jimmy Sheirgill), a childhood friend who has been in love with her for years, is the one she has fallen in love with.

On the day of the engagement, Sarita's political adversaries attempt to undermine Nimmi's engagement to Dev, a member of a well-known family, by bringing up Shalu's paternal heritage. Shalu decides to take matters into her own hands and rushes to Dev's home where she publicly admits that she was born out of wedlock, claiming that Sarita's generosity and kindness in adopting Shalu is evidence of those qualities. Shalu's bravery impresses Mr. Khanna, who pledges that nothing will prevent the wedding.

Secretly observing Shalu's confession, Sarita is moved to tears. They have their first hug after she is ashamed of how she treated Shalu. Sarita assures her that if Shalu and Dev are truly in love, she will persuade Nimmi to step aside.

Shalu forbids her from doing so, claiming that she is content with her mother's acceptance and love at this point.

Nimmi is overjoyed that Shalu has been welcomed by her mother, but she still senses that something is off about her sister. She quickly learns about the entire charade from Samir and eagerly makes room for Shalu so that Dev and Shalu can be together.
