Sanjay Leela Bhansali directed the romantic drama film Devdas in 2002. Mega Bollywood, Bharat Shah's production company, handled the production. Along with Madhuri Dixit, Aishwarya Rai, and Shah Rukh Khan, it also has Kirron Kher, Smita Jaykar, and Vijayendra Ghatge in supporting parts. Based on Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's 1917 novel of the same title, the movie tells the tale of affluent law graduate Devdas Mukherjee, who returns from London to wed his childhood friend Parvati "Paro." However, his spiral into alcoholism triggers his family's rejection of their marriage, ultimately causing his emotional state to deteriorate and him to seek solace with the kind-hearted courtesan. Chandramukhi

Kaushalya learns that her younger son Devdas, who left for law school in London ten years prior, is soon to return home in the 1900s. She informs Sumitra, her neighbour, who is ecstatic. Devdas and Parvati, also known as Paro, the daughter of the latter, have been close friends since they were little. Paro had lighted an oil lamp to signal Devdas' return when he was gone to London, and she never let it go out. Their friendship developed into love when Devdas came home. Everyone thinks Devdas and Paro would wed, but Kumud, Devdas' cunning sister-in-law, makes Kaushalya think of Paro's maternal ancestry of nautch girls and nautanki entertainers, which is improper for Devdas' family. Sumitra is so devastated that she quickly arranges for Paro to marry Bhuvan, a forty-year-old widower nobleman with three adult children who is richer than Devdas' family.

Devdas departs his parents' home and seeks shelter in a brothel after his father rejects Paro as well. He writes Paro a letter in which he falsely claims that they had never been in love. He meets Chandramukhi, a kind-hearted courtesan, at the brothel, and she develops feelings for him. Devdas soon comes to understand his error in leaving Paro. He approaches her again at the ceremony and offers to take her away, but Paro declines, reminding him of how easy he had let her go. Tearfully, Bhuvan proposes to Paro. Paro finds out from her husband that his devotion is just for his deceased first wife and that he only married her to be a parent to his kids and the woman of the estate. She performs her duties with diligence, but the devastated Devdas ultimately relocates to Chandramukhi's brothel and develops an addiction to alcohol. Devdas' father requests to visit Devdas as he lies dying. Later, the latter shows up at his father's funeral, makes a commotion, and eventually faints.

When Devdas visits the family home again, he finds that his sister-in-law has taken the family safe's keys from his mother. He confronts her, but Kumud reports that Devdas stole the keys from his mother. His mother rejects her, and Devdas departs after being exiled. Upon entering Chandramukhi's brothel, Paro accuses her of inducing Devdas to consume alcohol, but she soon finds that Chandramukhi adores Devdas. Paro implores Devdas to give off drinking, but he resists. He assures Paro that he would visit her doorway one final time before passing away.

Paro introduces Chandramukhi to her in-laws and invites her to a Durga Puja celebration at her husband's house without disclosing Chandramukhi's line of work. However, Chandramukhi's history is revealed by Bhuvan's rude son-in-law Kalibabu, a frequent client of the brothel, who also tries to embarrass her in front of the guests. However, Chandramukhi admits that he is the one who visits her location and the logic why her brothel is still profitable. She hits him and then turns away dejected. Bhuvan and his mother are informed of Paro's friendship with Devdas by Kalibabu. Bhuvan consequently prevents Paro from exiting the house ever again.

Devdas eventually deteriorates to the point where even a small amount of alcohol could be fatal. Devdas plans to explore the country after telling Chandramukhi that she must let him go. While on a train, he runs across Chunnilal, an old college classmate who encourages him to drink for the sake of friendship. Devdas consumes alcohol despite knowing that it will be fatal. On the verge of death, Devdas travels to Paro's house to honour his promise, collapsing under a tree in front of the main gate. She dashes through the mansion in an effort to reach him after realising that the man lying outside is actually him. When Bhuvan notices this, he tells the servants to close the gates. The gates shut just as Paro reaches him, trapping her inside sobbing while Devdas sees a distorted vision of her running toward him. As Devdas slowly expires, he utters Paro's name in his final breath, and Paro's lamp immediately goes out.

Devdas was a critical and commercial success. It was highly anticipated due to the scale at which it was being made, becoming the most expensive Bollywood movie of that time. It was a blockbuster hit, collecting an estimated INR 168 crores at the box office. Shah Rukh Khan's portrayal of Devdas is still celebrated to this day and some of its iconic dialogues are still used in popular culture.
