A skilled individual, referred to as a coach, assists a student or client in accomplishing a particular personal or professional objective by offering training and direction in the practise of coaching. 

The learner may also be referred to as a coachee. Sometimes the term 'coaching' refers to a casual partnership between two individuals, one of whom has more knowledge and experience than the other and provides counsel as the latter learns. Coaching differs from mentoring in that it focuses on particular tasks or objectives rather than more general objectives or overall development.

The term 'coach' was initially used to refer to a teacher or trainer in Oxford University slang for a tutor who 'carried' a pupil through an exam circa 1830.

Sports, the performing arts (singers receive vocal coaching), acting (actors receive dialect and drama coaches), business, education, health care, and relationships are all areas where coaching is used (for example, dating coaches).

Coaches help clients change their perspectives so they can find new ways to accomplish their goals by using a variety of communication techniques (such as focused restatement, listening, questioning, clarifying, etc.). 

Nearly all coaching scenarios can benefit from these abilities. In this way, coaching is a 'meta-profession' that may be used to assist clients in any aspect of human effort, including their issues with regard to their health, personal, professional, sporting, social, family, political, and spiritual dimensions, among others. Some coaching actions may overlap with other coaching tasks.
