A two-player board game is chess. Regarded distinguish it from kindred games like xiangqi and shogi, it is occasionally referred to as Western chess or international chess. 

After developing from chaturanga, a closely related but much earlier game of Indian origin, the modern version of the game first appeared in Spain and the rest of Southern Europe in the second half of the 15th century. Chess is one of the most played games in the world today, with millions of players.

Chess is an abstract game of strategy with no secret information. A 64-square chessboard with an eight-by-eight grid is used to play it. Each player starts with sixteen pieces—a king, a queen, two rooks, two bishops, two knights, and eight pawns—controlling the white pieces and the black pieces, respectively. 

The goal of the game is to checkmate your opponent's king, which means that it is immediately under attack and has no ability to flee (also known as 'in check'). A game might also conclude in a draw in a number of other ways.

Chess players who achieve the title of Grandmaster (GM) are recognised by the FIDE, the world chess federation. Grandmaster is the greatest accolade a chess player can receive outside of World Champion. Once earned, the title is retained for life, though it has very rarely been withdrawn for dishonesty. 

Indian chess players currently number 33,028 rated players as of January 2021, which is according to FIDE, the International Chess Federation. Vishwanathan Anand is considered the best Chess Player in India. There are 76 Grandmasters (GM), 124 International Masters (IM), 18 Woman Grandmasters (WGM), 42 Woman International Masters (WIM), and top WFM (Fide masters) like Sreya Sree from Chennai and Sai Ved - FM from Bangalore who is aspiring to be GMs.
