Rumy Jafry is the director of the 2021 Hindi mystery-thriller film Chehre, which is made by Anand Pandit and Saraswati Entertainment Private Limited. The movie, an uncredited adaptation of the 1956 German novel A Dangerous Game by Friedrich Dürrenmatt, stars Amitabh Bachchan and Emraan Hashmi in the lead roles. It also stars Krystle D'Souza, Rhea Chakraborty, Siddhanth Kapoor, Annu Kapoor, Alexx O'Nell and Raghubir Yadav in supporting roles.
A business tycoon named Sameer Mehra seeks refuge from a hazardous snowstorm in an elderly man's house in the mountains at the beginning of the story. He is introduced to several people, including Hariya Jadhav, Anna Matthews, a housekeeper, Paramjeet Singh Bhullar, a well-known defence attorney, and retired judge Jagdish Acharya. Later, Lateef Zaidi, a well-known public prosecutor with a quick wit and attention to detail, joins them.
In order to determine whether Sameer is the appropriate subject for a practical game they play among themselves, Lateef strikes up a discussion with him. Since he was orphaned at the age of 15, Sameer describes himself as a competent and determined executive of an advertising business who has done everything on his own. During Sameer's break, Lateef tells his buddies that he is positive that Sameer is the ideal topic for their game. Because they respect his judgement, they all concur.
Sameer is forced to participate in the game by everyone, and he does. An ex-convict charged with murder, Joe Matthews, later joins them. Jagdish explains to Sameer that Joe was sentenced because he was found killing the man who had sexually abused his sister, but now he has completed his time, everyone is friendly with him.
In essence, the game is a simulated trial where players set up a courtroom and debate well-known cases. Due to Anna's lack of preparation for a well-known case Lateef had earlier requested of her, Sameer accepts to serve as their defendant. Before the court session begins, Jagdish informs Sameer of his rights and lets him know that he can meet with Bhullar, his defence attorney, to go through his case. When they are alone together, Sameer claims that because he hasn't broken any laws, his case won't hold up in court. Bhullar disagrees, arguing that it would be risky to avoid any criminal charges in the mock trial because the prosecuting attorney would then have full discretion to bring any charges against him. Sameer dismisses this notion and declares that he would leave.
As the trial gets underway, Lateef is able to elicit personal information about Sameer's professional life. Although Sameer first answers all inquiries honestly out of naiveté, Lateef is able to establish with accuracy that Sameer had a relationship with his boss's wife. He comes to the conclusion that Sameer conspired with his boss' wife to assassinate him so that he could become the CEO after more investigation. The judge now announces that charges are to be filed and the trial will begin, turning the fake trial into a genuine one. Then he allows the defence some time to get ready for the trial.
During this break, Sameer discovers that Joe is actually Anna's brother and that Hariya is a former hangman. He attempts to flee the house because he is terrified, but Joe stops him. Sameer is now aware of his entire entrapment. As the trial gets underway, Lateef plays a video from Sameer's phone as proof of his extramarital affair with Natasha, the wife of his late boss G.S. Oswal, and their plot to have him killed. After a heated exchange between Bhullar and Lateef, the court pronounces a guilty verdict and imposes the death penalty.
Everyone now demands that Sameer accompany Hariya upstairs, where he will likely be hanged to death. Sameer makes fun of them, calling them true criminals who execute people for their games. Lateef responds that the entire trial was captured on CCTV and that he would face punishment in either this court or a legitimate court. Fearing for his life, Sameer grabs a gun and threatens everyone with it before stealing the DVR from the CCTV and fleeing the house with everyone chasing after him. Sameer successfully destroys the DVR, but in a rushed action, he unintentionally plunges down the cliff and perishes, bringing poetic punishment to his crime.
A few days later, Natasha comes to their home and claims to be there to get Sameer's phone, which belongs to her business. Everyone manages to get Natasha to join their game as the movie comes to a close.
Chehre was a critically acclaimed movie, with the critics praising its unique plot and acting performances of Emraan Hashmi and Amitabh Bachchan. It did mediocre business at the box office, collecting a gross total of INR 40 crores.
