Ali Abbas Zafar's drama film Bharat is set in India and is directed in Hindi. Under the umbrellas of Reel Life Productions, Salman Khan Films, and T-Series, it is co-produced by Atul Agnihotri, Alvira Khan Agnihotri, Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, Nikhil Namit, and Salman Khan. Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif, Sunil Grover, Disha Patani, Jackie Shroff, Sonali Kulkarni, and Tabu appear in the film. It tells the story of India's post-independence history through the eyes of a regular man, from the age of eight to seventy.
In 2010, despite tempting offers, Bharat Kumar, a Delhi shopkeeper, refused to sell his store. On his 70th birthday, he tells his grandniece about his history, and the movie switches to flashback mode.
The film starts with a flashback to the 1947 India partition. Bharat was just seven years old when his parents and siblings boarded a train to India with a large group of refugees fleeing Pakistan's riots. In the midst of the chaos, Bharat loses his baby sister "Gudia" (Barbiee Sharma). Gautam, their father, stays behind to look for Gudia after Bharat vows to look after the family. He goes to Gautam's sister Jamuna's and her husband Keemat Rai Kapoor's imported goods store, where he encounters Radha, a roadside circus performer. They fall in love and decide to become members of the Great Russian Circus.
17 years passed by and Bharat gained a lot of notoriety for the time he spent in the circus. Chote, his younger brother, has an accident while attempting to imitate him. When the country is shocked by Nehru's death, he and his companion Vilayti hunt for work.
11 years later, Bharat joins the influx of Indian migrants caused by the discovery of oil in Saudi Arabia in order to help finance his sister Mehek's wedding. He falls in love with his chief engineer Kumud, who proposes marriage to him. Bharat declines, believing that doing so would jeopardise his ability to keep Gautam's vow. Kumud declares her love for him back in India and they start living together.
The story then jumps to the year 1995 and Kumud becomes the creative director of newly founded Zee TV during India's economic liberalisation and globalisation, and organises a programme to reunite families who were separated during the partition. As a result of this, Bharat meets Meher, a Londoner adopted by a British family during the partition, and discovers that she is Gudia, who returns to India. After that, there's an emotional reunion. Janki passes away, and Bharat expects to find Gautam as well.
The climax then takes us back to the present day. Bharat decides to sell the store, something he had been adamant about despite losses. Before getting on the train, Gautam vowed he'd meet him at the store, which explains why Bharat has been holding on to the store for so long. Gautam is definitely too old to survive any longer, he realises. He sees himself in a vision, assuring Bharat that he kept his word and asks him to move on. With tears in his eyes, he marries Kumud and moves on.
Despite the criticism about the story and acting performances by some cast members, Bharat was termed as a financially hit film, earning close to 350 crores. It was one of the highest grossing films of 2019 and Salman Khan is still praised for his portrayal of Bharat as one of his best acting performances in recent times.
