The action spy movie Agent Vinod, which was released in 2012 in Hindi, was written and directed by Sriram Raghavan and was co-produced by Saif Ali Khan and Dinesh Vijan. Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor play the key characters in the movie, which takes its name from the 1977 movie of the same name. Ram Kapoor, Prem Chopra, Shahbaz Khan, Ravi Kishan, and Adil Hussain also make notable appearances.
A captured individual believed to be a RAW spy is being questioned by ISI official Col. Huzefa inside a Taliban camp in the Dasht-E-maadar desert of Kotha, Afghanistan. In exchange for cash and safe return from across border, the individual divulges information regarding RAW's operations in Afghanistan. He betrays Major Rajan, a coworker who also broke inside the camp. This is just a ploy, as they both defeat their captors and escape the camp. They manage to save Farah along the way.
Agent Vinod visits the RAW office in New Delhi to meet with his boss, Hassan Nawaz. He sees Major Rajan's parting message from Russia from Nawaz. Rajan is assassinated by a man right after he finishes his message. Nawaz requests that Vinod research what "242" is. In St. Petersburg, Vinod visits the nightclub run by notorious mobster Abu Nazer. He succeeds in apprehending and questioning Nazer, who reveals that a man by the name of Freddie Khambatta is planning to sneak the money to Morocco. Despite coming dangerously close to being arrested by Nazer's men, Vinod escapes and kills Nazer in the act.
Vinod takes a plane for Morocco's Tangier. It turns out that the flight steward is Freddie Khambatta. He is picked up at the airport by Vinod, who then takes his place. Vinod encounters mafia boss David Kazan as Freddie, who is with his personal physician, Ruby Mendes. Vinod is under suspicion by Kazan, who has Ruby give him a truth serum. Vinod screams out that he killed Abu Nazer and is a RAW agent. When Vinod regains consciousness, Kazan confronts him, but Vinod is able to convince him that he is Freddie Khambatta and that he had to kill Abu Nazer in order to preserve the mission. By hacking Kazan's phone, he learns that an MI6 agent is travelling to Morocco the following day.
Vinod approaches Ruby while trying to figure out what "242" means. Iram Parveen Bilal, a British-Pakistani who is undercover with the ISI, is the real Ruby. When Vinod arrives to meet the MI6 agent, he discovers him dead in his room, with clear indications that Ruby was responsible for the crime. He finds a secret auction invitation in the chamber of the assassinated agent. He discovers that numerous foreign terrorist organisations are coming together in Marakkesh to buy "242" in an antiques auction.
Ruby is present at the auction along with Kazan and Jagadishwar Metla thanks to Vinod. Vinod recognises an LTTE agent he has previously dealt with and learns from him that "242" is actually the nuclear device's detonator, disguising itself as an old copy of Omar Khayyam's "Rubaiyyat." In the ensuing bidding conflict, Kazan succeeds in acquiring the detonator.
Rajat Kapoor, the ISI chief, is assassinated in Chaman, Baluchistan, by Col. Huzefa, who is actually a member of a group of renegade ISI colonels preparing an attack on India. Kazan gives the Colonel, who has landed in Morocco, the detonator after locking it with a password. In a chance encounter with the genuine Freddie Khambatta, Iram learns that Vinod is a RAW spy. After escaping the men who were attempting to assassinate them, both decide to cooperate to keep the nuclear weapon out of the wrong hands. When Ruby goes back to Kazan's mansion, she discovers that Kazan has been murdered by a "Colonel." Ruby is taken prisoner by the "Colonel," who demands information regarding Agent Vinod's whereabouts. He positions a sharpshooter close to the motel where Agent Vinod and Ruby are supposed to meet. He is fired at by the sniper, but Vinod is able to flee and is taken to the hospital. Under the pretence of a doctor, the assassin enters the hospital and attempts to inject Vinod with venom. Vinod overpowers the doctor after spotting the scorpion tattoo on his forearm. Then he makes his way out of the medical facility to find Iram.
In order to obtain the bomb, "Colonel," who already possesses the detonator, has travelled to Riga, Latvia. He asks Iram to woo a security guard at the airport so he may get his ID. Iram is successful in doing this, and the "Colonel" gives his man—who would be transporting the bomb out of Latvia—the ID card. The Colonel also plants a fake bomb so that it explodes and kills Iram and the airport worker. Iram realises she was just being set by the Colonel when Vinod arrives and begins questioning her while the explosion takes place.
Iram hastily makes his way to the display where Colonel is prowling as a pilot. Iram runs towards "Colonel," is shot, but alerts Indian security troops who then shoot and kill him. Vinod eventually locates the bomb and hoists it into the air in a helicopter to set it off as far from the city as he can. Iram asks Vinod to try using David Kazan's camel's name, "Zilleh," after realising that Kazan had established the detonator's password. Iram is shot and dies as a result of the device being defused. Vinod later views a recording of Metla plotting the attack.
Vinod charges Metla and the Zeus organisation of committing mass murder in order to profit from trading on international stock exchanges and of igniting a nuclear war in the subcontinent for geopolitical objectives. Vinod is made fun of by Metla, who tells him that only "lowly police officials" can appreciate the complexity of global politics. Vinod, however, is wearing a wire, and the Lashkar-e-London Toiba's cell is listening in. The Lashkar deploys a suicide attacker to eliminate Metla at a celebration in his honour after realising they had been duped by Metla of almost sparking a war with India and that the Pakistani government was ruthlessly repressing them. Metla is murdered, although he is celebrated as a great benefactor after his death.
The stunning Russian girl who originally obtained the nuclear weapon is pictured vacationing on a seashore in Cape Town. When she looks up, Agent Vinod is grinning at her. It's clear that Vinod is already on his next assignment.
