The follow-up to James Cameron's 2009 science fiction blockbuster Avatar, Avatar: The Way of Water, is a forthcoming epic movie from the United States. The movie, the second in the Avatar film series, is distributed by 20th Century Studios. The screenplay was written by Cameron, Rick Jaffa, and Amanda Silver and was based on a plot that Josh Friedman and Shane Salerno and the three of them co-wrote. Cameron co-produced the movie with Jon Landau. Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaa, Stephen Lang, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Giovanni Ribisi, Dileep Rao, and Matt Gerald are among the cast members who return to their roles from the first movie. At the same time, Sigourney Weaver plays a new part.  The new cast members are Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Edie Falco, Jemaine Clement, and Brendan Cowell.

James Cameron, who is now directing both Avatar 2 and Avatar 3, has made it clear that he wants to use virtual underwater environments in those films (principal photography has wrapped). That requires teaching the cast members, including Kate Winslet, who plays free-diver Ronal of the Metkayina tribe, how to hold their breath in addition to Weta Digital mastering underwater performance capture.

The producer of Lightstorm, Jon Landau, reportedly recently visited the Alita: Battle Angel set at Weta in Wellington, New Zealand.
