Selfiee, an adaptation of the critically acclaimed and financially successful Malayalam film Driving Licence, centres on superstar Vijay Kumar and one of his most devoted admirers, Om Prakash Aggarwal. The star travels to Bhopal to shoot a movie and has to visit the RTO because the final scene requires him to have a new driver's license. That brings him to Om, who appears to be the only RTO Inspector in Bhopal. Due to a miscommunication, Vijay embarrasses Om in front of his superiors and son. Om makes the decision to take his revenge and demonstrate that the celebrity isn't above the law.
Selfiee has a powerful basis and provides a chance to talk about the fleeting nature of fame, its significance in the age of social media, the characteristics of true stardom, media manipulation, the traps of petty egos, and the subject of how Bollywood has ingrained itself so deeply in our lives. Despite having such a brilliant and appealing concept, the film falls flat as Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar overtakes the topic.
Om Prakash Aggarwal is shown in the film as the example of a great guy and a family man, while Vijay is depicted as the stereotypically arrogant actor. As a result, it is amusing to see how the two behave as they follow their agendas. For the most part, Akshay's impatient snapping and Emraan Hashmi's helpless devotion work well together. But, as the plot develops, the fights become laughably stupid, and Vijay and Om are portrayed as helpless kids in need of a good beating.
While the film wants to support Om, who just wanted a simple selfie with his favourite celebrity, it also depicts at least two cases in which celebrities were harassed and mistreated by fans who wanted to photograph them.
Selfie is a watchable movie even though its plot can be inconsistent, assuming you're not expecting something profound or thought-provoking.
Akshay Kumar portrays the famous and pompous star in a lighthearted manner. Yet, when he focuses too much on the arrogant side of the character, he can be incredibly annoying. His performance, however, is one of the things that keeps the picture moving. Equally striking is Emraan's transformation into a big fan-turned-enemy. He passionately upholds the actions of middle-class and humble individuals, even when undertaking extraordinary acts. His occasional disappearance of the Bhopali accent is the sole drawback.
As Vijay's former roommate who is now forced to speak cringe-worthy lines for sketchy films and advertisements, Abhimanyu is funny. But after a while, his performances start to sound forced. Diana Penty, who plays Vijay's wife Naina, doesn't have a lot of responsibility in this movie, but she does a good job portraying the sophisticated and encouraging wife. Nushrratt Bharuccha does a good job of playing the role of a young Bhopali woman Minty, Om Prakash's better half.
Vimla Tiwari, played by Meghna Malik, is one of the characters in the movie that keeps you involved and entertained. Particularly in interactions with Akshay, Meghna stands out thanks to her flawless comic timing.
The first half of the film is expertly handled by director Raj Mehta, who keeps it lighthearted and engaging while sprinkling it with humorous one-liners that the actor performs with confidence and ease. The wit is less evident in the second half, which is focused on the confrontation between the two protagonists.
Selfiee is a light-hearted film with a few standout performances and plenty of belly laughs. This can be a fantastic choice if you want to spend the weekend with a fun and entertaining movie.
