Jake Gyllenhaal starred in Dan Gilroys 2014 picture Nightcrawler, which he also wrote and directed. The movie told the tale of Lou Bloom (Gyllenhaal), a man who wanted to make a living and live a respectable life but did some awful things in the process. Even if that is a massive oversimplification of the movie's intricate and intellectual plot, that is essentially what it was about. The obscure Malayalam movie Mukundan Unni, released in November 2023, is a remake of Nightcrawler in both spirit and soul. It is so dissimilar from the original that it offers a unique viewing experience.
Mukundan Unni Associates constructs a whole new world and populates it with familiar people using the endoskeleton of Nightcrawler as a foundation. The movie then places the main character in the middle of every potential obstacle to his goals and objectives. It lets him make judgments based on his intelligence and uncompromising character. From the outset, Mukundan Unni suppresses his thoughts and only takes actions that he thinks will lead to a respected and pleasant existence.
He talks a lot to himself and uses a wide variety of phrases that the audience will surely chuckle at since his inner speech does not match his quiet and plain appearance. But as the movie continues, we watch as he falls even lower into a bottomless, pitch-black abyss. The movie will undoubtedly captivate you inside the first five minutes of its runtime, thanks to its captivating narrative and eccentric lead character.
The protagonist's voice-over keeps the audience informed about everything in his head and provides essential details about things that are difficult to understand from his face, which has only one expression the entire time. This might not be good for the movie under other circumstances, but not in this one. This movie does a great job of downplaying the evil that Mukundan Unni is ultimately proven capable of, which makes some of the last scenes quite startling and terrible for the characters we know and love.
This movie is entirely under the direction and management of Abhinav Sunder Nayak, who also co-wrote the script. Every frame of the movie exhibits the director's control, whether through shot selection, aspect ratio, editing speed, or camera angle selection. The movie's aspect ratio changes from 4:3 to 16:9 throughout the narrative. This decision greatly benefits the first half of the movie since it allows us to see more of the faces and activities that the cinematography focuses on, which allows the viewer to connect with these parts of the movie on a much more intimate level.
Additionally, it enables the audience to interpret the expressions and visual displays by observing them. The focus on Mukundan Unnis face as he navigates through various circumstances and issues is a crucial component for strengthening the attraction and highlighting the drama that the character carries with it, even if all of these things are very obvious.
Mukundan Unni Associates is the culmination of numerous disparate elements to produce a filmic representation of a challenging and exquisite work of art. You may watch it again and again and be entertained. Your mind will start to wonder about it. It will provide answers while also leading you to doubt the solutions. Just like Nightcrawler, Mukundan Unni Associates will conclude most unexpectedly.
You will simultaneously adore and detest the main character due to it. It is virtually impossible to categorize it because of its seemingly limitless range of emotions. Its enough to say that this movie is one of the most enjoyable, funny, and thought-provoking movies to watch.
