What is Krishna Janmashtami?

What-is-Krishna-Janmashtami.tringKrishna Janmashtami, also known as Krishnashtami, Janmashtami, or Gokulashtami, is an annual Hindu festival commemorating Krishna's birth, Vishnu's eighth avatar. Krishna is described as the greatest deity and the origin of all incarnations in some Hindu writings, such as the Gitagovinda. In accordance with amanta and purnimanta traditions, Krishna's birth is celebrated and observed on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the dark fortnight (Krishna Paksha) in Shravana Masa or Bhadrapada Masa. The Gregorian calendar's months of August or September coincide with this.

It is a significant festival, especially in the Hindu Vaishnavism tradition. The celebratory customs associated with Janmashtami include a celebration festival, reading and reciting religious texts, dance performances based on the Bhagavata Purana, devotional singing until midnight (the time of Krishna's birth), and fasting (upavasa) are just a few of the celebration customs associated with Janmashtami. It is extensively observed in India and around the world.

Significance Of Krishna Janmashtami

Significance-Of-Krishna-Janmashtami.tringThe Mahabharata, the Puranas, and the Bhagavata Purana all contain information regarding Krishna's life. The eighth child born to Devaki and Vasudeva is Krishna. Around the time of his birth, there was a rash of persecution, freedoms were curtailed, and King Kamsa's life was in danger. Krishna was born in a prison in Mathura, India, where his uncle Kamsa held his parents captive.

A celestial voice informed Kamsa during Devaki's wedding that Devaki's eighth kid would be the reason for his demise. Kamsa imprisoned Devaki and her husband and immediately executed all of her newborns following their birth in an effort to disprove the prophecy. When Krishna was born, the guards in charge of keeping an eye on Devaki's cell fell asleep, and the cell doors magically opened. Vasudeva was able to send Krishna to his foster parents, Yashoda (loved ones) and Nanda (father), across the Yamuna River as a result of these occurrences.

Along with Krishna, the avatar of Shesha incarnated on Earth as Krishna's older brother Balarama. Balarama was the first child of Vasudeva with his first wife, Rohini. On Janmashtami, people observe fasts, sing devotional songs of love for Krishna, and keep vigil until the wee hours of the morning to commemorate this legend. Krishna's newborn forms are cleaned, dressed, and then put in a cradle after his midnight delivery. The followers then share food and desserts to break their fast. Women depict Krishna's journey into their homes by drawing tiny footprints outside their kitchen doors and home entrances.

How Is Krishna Janmashtami Celebrated?

Krishna-Janmashtami-Celebrations.tringHindus observe a day of fasting, communal prayer, singing, cooking and sharing of special foods, night vigils, and visits to Krishna or Vishnu temples to commemorate Janmashtami. Pilgrims travel to Mathura and Vrindavan to pay their respects. Bhagavata Purana and Bhagavad Gita recitations are held regularly at significant Krishna temples. Rasa Lila or Krishna Lila is a dance-drama performance that is organised by many northern Indian groups.

Rasa Lila is a ritual that is particularly well-liked in the Mathura region, in northeastern Indian states like Manipur and Assam, as well as in some areas of Rajasthan and Gujarat. These drama-dance plays start a few days before each Janmashtami and are performed by several teams of amateur performers who are supported by their local communities. People use lights and flowers to decorate their homes. On this day, people chant, loved onesHare Krishna hare Krishna, Krishna- Krishna Hare Hareloved ones. The Janmashtami celebration is followed by Dahi Handi, which is celebrated the next day.

Here is how Krishna Janmashtami is celebrated in various parts of India,

Maharashtra

The state of Maharashtra, particularly the cities of Mumbai and Pune, also celebrates Janmashtami in a huge way. The Dahi Handi ritual, also known as Gokulashtami here, is the festival's main attraction and a tribute to Lord Krishna's love of butter and curd. This is where a group of young men known as the Govinda create a human pyramid in an effort to break the clay pot and spill the yoghurt. The earthen pot is suspended in the air far above (about 20 to 30 feet above the ground). Then, everyone is given this yoghurt as prasad. The Govindas are surrounded by spectators who cheer them on and occasionally even hurl buckets of water to make the ascent more difficult.

The winning team receives a cash award that could be worth hundreds of thousands of rupees depending on the event's sponsors as they compete against one another to break the pot. Numerous locations throughout the city host this ritual, and at some of them even Bollywood stars make an appearance.

Gujarat

The Gujarati city of Dwarka, known as the City of Lord Krishna, also fervently observes the festival. The Dahi Handi tradition is also practised in this area, although it is known here as Makhan Handi (a pot filled with churned butter). Celebrations for the entire night start early, including a garba dance, singing of religious songs, and Raslila performances.

Fasting is also fairly typical. Dwarkadhish, a temple devoted to Lord Krishna, is the most exquisitely designed building in the nation and draws adoring visitors from all over the place. The mangal aarti, which is conducted in the morning, is the part of the festivities that everyone should attend.

Uttar Pradesh

Although this day is commonly referred to as Janmashtami, the nomenclature and associated rituals vary from place to place. The state of Uttar Pradesh in northern India, notably the cities of Mathura, Krishna's birthplace, and Vrindavan, where he is thought to have spent his formative years, are the greatest places to enjoy the grandeur of the occasion.

The festivities last for several weeks here. Temples are colourfully decorated, pandals (temporary tents) are erected, and Raslila performances—a folk dance-drama illustrating significant events from Krishna's life—take place in the days preceding the festival. In a ritual known as Abhishek, the idols of Krishna are anointed with milk, honey, and curd. Thereafter, the statues are dressed in fresh clothing and jewellery and set in elaborately decorated cradles. People can be heard chanting prayers and hymns in the distance.

South India

The festivities are different in South India than they are in the North. For instance, in Tamil Nadu, people make Krishna's footprints and stunning artistic designs called kolam using rice batter at their front door. Young boys in Andhra Pradesh visit friends and neighbours while dressed as Krishna. Fruits and treats are initially offered to Krishna before being shared with the populace. Other widespread customs include fasting, singing devotional songs, and reciting sholkas (Sanskrit poems).

Odisha and West Bengal

In the eastern provinces of Odisha and West Bengal, the festival is known as Sri Krishna Jayanti or Sri Jayanti. People observe a day of fasting and recite the tenth chapter of the Bhagavata Purana until midnight to commemorate the occasion. The celebration of Nanda and Yashoda, Krishna's foster parents, begins the following morning. On this day, which is known as Nanda Utsav, worshippers offer the god Chappan bhog before breaking their fast.

Manipur

Fasting, scripture recitation, vigils, the Raslila dance, and visits to the well-known ISKCON and Shree Govindajee temples are all part of the festivities in Manipur.

Along with India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Fiji, Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, Singapore, and some regions of the USA also observe the festival of Krishna Janmashtami.
