Nana Patekar is one of the most bankable actors in Indian cinema. His immense acting prowess and range of emotions have made him an actor many up-and-coming actors look up to. From ‘Krantiveer’ to ‘Welcome’, Nana Patekar has repeatedly proved to the Indian audience that he can play any role with relative ease and conviction second to none. He may be considered Bollywood’s “bad boy” for the various grey characters he has been playing over the decades, but his foray into the romance genre has been anything but a disappointment. So, here are five of Nana Patekar’s romantic movies that will make you believe in love again!
Tadka: Love Is Cooking, more commonly known as ‘Tadka’ is a 2022 romantic comedy film directed by Prakash Raj that was released online on 4th November 2022 as a direct-to-OTT release. It was released on ZEE5 and is the remake of the 2011 hit Malayalam film ‘Salt N’ Pepper’.
Tadka is a story about two individuals, Tukaram (played by Nana Patekar) and Madhura (played by Shriya Saran). They get in touch because of a phone call placed by mistake and gradually hit it off. Because of their own insecurities, they decide to send Siddharth (played by Ali Fazal) and Nicole (played by Taapsee Pannu) as their respective decoys and the two get along pretty well. What follows is a series of comedic errors and confusion that is sure to tickle your funny bone!
Nana Patekar yet again proves why he is not only a jack of all trades but also a master of all. His wide range of emotions displayed in the movie Tadka can be compared to that of the late Irrfan Khan’s ‘Lunchbox’, which is considered one of Irrfan Khan’s best works. The portrayal of romance in its nascent form by Nana Patekar gives is a breath of fresh air from the actor, who has been off the romantic movie genre for quite some time.
Wajood is no ordinary love story. It is a tale of many broken hearts and countless murders by a love-struck Romeo who is on a quest for vengeance for all the wrongdoings that have happened in his life. Nana Patekar plays the role of Malhar Agnihotri, a clerk who is also a theatre artist with great panache and trophies to justify his talents. He falls in love with Apoorva, played by Madhuri Dixit, who is also a theatre artist. He mistakes her kindness for love and becomes an obsessive lover who would go to any lengths (which includes murders) to win the love of his life.
Nana Patekar displays an array of emotions which include grief, anger, love and resentment. His path to darkness in the quest for love is beautifully fleshed out in the movie Wajood, which is also considered one of Nana Patekar’s best works to date.
Wedding Anniversary is a 2017 movie directed by Shekhar S Jha and produced by Kumar Mahant and Achyut Naik. It stars Nana Patekar and Mahie Gill in lead roles.
Wedding Anniversary is a film about a couple, Kahani (played by Mahie Gill) and Nirbhay (played by Priyanshu Chatterjee) who decide to travel to Goa to celebrate their wedding anniversary. Nirbhay had to postpone his departure because of some last-minute work which left Kahani alone in Goa, waiting for her husband. She decided to read a book by her favourite author Nagarjun (played by Nana Patekar) to pass her time. To Kahani’s, disbelief, Nagarjun shows up at her doorstep and the two have an eventful conversation which forms the base of the movie.
Nana Patekar brings composure that was much needed in this movie filled with tension between the couple on their wedding anniversary. Guns, Gangsters and Grief - what more does one require to create the perfect Nana Patekar hit movie? This 1997 movie was praised by critics and audiences alike, who applauded the chemistry between Nana Patekar’s and Paresh Rawal’s characters and also the sincerity with which Nana Patekar played the role. This may not be your typical mushy Bollywood love story, but the conviction in the eyes of Nana with which he describes his love for Kavita, played by Raveena Tandon, is enough to tell you how much the characters loved each other.
Horn ‘Ok’ Pleassss is a 2009 Hindi film directed by Rakesh Sarang and stars Nana Patekar, Rimi Sen and Muzammil Ibrahim in the lead roles. It is a very unconventional love story filled with humorous elements that makes it one of a kind. Nana Patekar plays the role of Govinda, who is a billionaire truck driver whose only motive in life is to spread love. One day, he comes across Ajay, played by Muzammil Ibrahim, who seeks help from Govinda to win the love of his life Sia (played by Rimi Sen). There is one problem though, as Sia bears a striking resemblance to Govinda’s wife Ria (also played by Rimi Sen). It is later revealed that Sia and Ria are twin sisters which creates a comedy of errors and a laugh riot ensues after.
Even with a weak script, Nana Patekar is at his romantic best which helps the movie as the plot progresses. His natural charm and persona will make you believe that he really is in love with his wife, which any other actor may have struggled to convey just by actions.
