The Shiva Tandava Stotra is a revered Sanskrit religious hymn dedicated to the Hindu deity Shiva. This hymn holds great significance as it pays homage to Shiva, who is regarded as one of the primary gods in Hinduism and the supreme deity in Shaivism.
Traditionally, the authorship of the Shiva Tandava Stotra is attributed to Ravana, the ruler of Lanka. Ravana is believed to have been an ardent devotee of Shiva, and the hymn serves as a testament to his devotion. Its verses eloquently describe the cosmic dance of Lord Shiva, portraying his immense power, grace, and divine presence.
The Shiva Tandava Stotra is not only revered for its spiritual and poetic beauty but is also considered a source of inspiration and devotion for many followers of the Shaivite tradition. It is recited and chanted by devotees as a means of worship and to seek blessings from Lord Shiva.
According to the Hindu epic Ramayana, in the Uttara Kanda, the mighty king Ravana, who had ten heads and twenty arms, conquered and plundered Alaka, the city of his stepbrother and the god of wealth Kubera, which was located near Mount Kailash. Ravana, triumphant in his theft of Kubera's flying chariot, the Pushpaka Vimana, was on his way back to Lanka when he came across a particularly lovely location. The chariot, however, could not get around it. At the spot, Ravana encountered Shiva's demigod-bull attendant Nandi (Nandisha, Nandikeshvara) and inquired as to why his chariot was unable to cross the spot. Nandi told Ravana that Shiva and Parvati were having a good time making out on the mountain, so he should stay away. Mocking Shiva and Nandi, Ravana left.
Enraged by the insult to his master, Nandi cursed Ravana, saying that Vanaras would destroy him. Ravana, frustrated by Nandi's curse and his own incapacity to move forward, ultimately decided to uproot Kailash. He started lifting Kailash with all twenty of his arms under it. Parvati, terrified as Kailash began to tremble, ran to embrace Shiva. Shiva, however, saw that Ravana was behind the threat and, using his big toe, pressed the mountain into place to ensnare Ravana beneath it. Ravana let out a piercing cry of agony. Ravana, with the help of his advisors, sang Shiva hymns for a thousand years. After much negotiation, Shiva not only granted Ravana forgiveness but also the indestructible Chandrahasa sword. The name "Ravana" means "one who cries," which is fitting given that Ravana was known for his frequent outbursts of weeping. The Shiva Tandava Stotra is a compilation of Ravana's sung verses.
The stotra is written in iambic octameter, with 16 syllables per line of the quatrain and an alternating pattern of short (laghu) and long (guru) characters. The entire poem is made up of 17 quatrains.
The hymn's ninth and tenth quatrains end with a catalogue of Shiva's destructive epithets, including "the destroyer of death." This poem is an example of Hindu devotional poetry, and its use of alliteration and onomatopoeia creates rolling waves of beautiful resonance.
Ravana asks, "When will I be happy?" in the poem's final quatrain after growing weary of his world-spanning rampage. Ravana received great power from Shiva and the celestial sword Chandrahasa as a result of his intense prayers and ascetic meditation, of which this hymn was an example.

Anyone who reads, remembers and recites this stotra as stated here
Is purified forever and obtains devotion in the great Guru Shiva.
For this devotion, there is no other way or refuge.
Just the mere thought of Shiva removes the delusion.
